Event Description
A special annual event for Black History Month, a film showing and discussion with the Society of Urban Poets. We plan on watching "Descendant," a documentary which follows members of Africatown, a small community in Alabama, as they share their personal stories and community history as descendants of the Clotilda, the last known slave ship to illegally transport human beings as cargo from Africa to America. The ship's existence, a centuries-old open secret, is confirmed by a team of marine archeologists. The film expands Zora Neale Hurston book “Barracoon: The Story of the Last ‘Black Cargo, whcih’” focuses on Africatown founder and Clotilda survivor Cudjoe Lewis. There will be snacks and drinks provided.
