Event Description
Along with members of our community, we are commemorating Juneteenth across our Metro locations with program, kits, and other activities.
What is Juneteenth? Also known as Freedom Day, Juneteenth is a commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Although the Emancipation Proclamation issued on January 1, 1863 declared enslaved persons legally free, it was not recognized in the Confederate territories. On June 19, 1865 troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas and let the enslaved people know that they were free. This day became known as Juneteenth and the celebration of this day continues today.
This kit includes an activity book that teaches the history of this period and of the celebration. A bookmark, pencil, and booklist are included for further reading on this event. A guide to local celebrations in the Oklahoma City area will also be included if you wish to participate in community events.
Kits are one per FAMILY. Duplicate registrations will be deleted. Kit pickup is available during regular library hours Wednesday, June 15th, through Saturday, June 18th. Please call the library to make alternate arrangements if you cannot make it to pick up your kit during this time. Leftover kits will be made available to waitlist customers on the next day.
