Event Description
Following World War I, the Greenwood District in Tulsa was nationally known as "Black Wall Street" due to the thriving and affluent community of African Americans and African American run businesses that made their home in the area. But on May 31st after a young black teenager named Dick Rowland was falsely accused of sexually assaulting a young white woman named Sarah Page, racial tensions became a powder keg that ended with 1000's of white Tulsans invading the Greenwood District, looting and burning homes and buildings as they went. This tragedy became one of the worst, but least known, incidents of racial violence in U.S. History.
Join local historian, Bruce Fisher, to learn about the full story with recorded first hand accounts from survivors.
