Children Make Terrible Pets by Peter Brown

Lucy, a young bear, meets a charming little boy in the forest. When she brings him home, her mother cautions her "children make terrible pets." Can Lucy prove her wrong? This title is a bonus borrow that doesn’t count against monthly borrows in Hoopla.

Host your own pet show!

In the Ezra Jack Keats book, Pet Show, the neighborhood is hosting a pet show and everyone is participating. Archie can’t find his cat,  but comes up with a creative solution to still enter the show. There are awards for brightest goldfish, busiest ants, fastest mouse, and more. Every pet gets their own award, just for them, even Archie’s submission. Listen to the hoopla audiobook of Pet Show then make your own. You can use toys or pictures to be the pets in your pet show and create special ribbons for each one.

Supplies: toys to be contestants. Paper and crayons to make the ribbons. Scissors and glue are optional.

  1. Choose toys and stuffies to participate in your show.

  1. Make your showcase—use a table or open space to line up the toys for “judging”

  1. What do your pets do? What makes them special? Make up the story for each animal.

  1. Create ribbons with paper and crayons and give each contestant their own ribbon with what makes them unique.
