Susan Smith appointed Interim CEO of Metropolitan Library System

Experienced library leader Susan Smith has been named Interim CEO of the Metropolitan Library System (MLS). Smith will assume the role vacated by Larry Nash White whose resignation is effective on May 29.

Together with our dedicated staff and the support of the MLS Commission, we will continue to innovate and grow to meet the needs of all our guests."
Currently serving as Chief Guest Officer, Smith directs the library’s Guest Services division, providing leadership, strategic direction and resource stewardship. She ensures overall service performance, aligns divisional goals with systemwide objectives, develops operational strategies, and serves on the Executive and Advisory Councils.
With over 25 years of experience, Smith is a passionate advocate for libraries and lifelong learning. She has held leadership roles at academic and public libraries in Texas and Florida and has demonstrated a proven track record in team leadership, strategic planning and organizational culture. Smith's extensive expertise includes education programming, youth engagement, customer service, technology integration, scholarly research and library management.
Smith holds a Ph.D. in Public and Urban Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington, a Master of Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma, and a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Oklahoma. Her work has been published in numerous journals and publications on a variety of library topics, and she is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Library Association and the Oklahoma Library Association.
Smith’s previous roles include Dean of Learning Commons at Tarrant County College and head of Library Research Support Services at the University of North Texas. In 2013, she was named the Hodges University Professor of the Year.

Under White's leadership since 2019, MLS saw significant growth, serving over five million visitors in FY2022 and doubling program attendance. White's initiatives included removing access barriers, resulting in increased library usage and program offerings, and implementing a "fine free" policy in 2021.
The MLS commission has begun a national search for a permanent CEO, with requirements including a master's degree in library science, previous experience as a librarian, and managerial or administrative experience.
