SIGN-UP FOR A LIBRARY CARD AND BE ENTERED TO WIN
OKLAHOMA CITY– There is one essential school supply that doesn’t require shopping and doesn’t cost a penny – a library card.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month at all Metro Libraries. Oklahoma County residents can sign up for a library card or refer a friend to be entered to win a Kindle Fire. The library is encouraging everyone to “check out something incredible!” this month.
The value of a library card adds up. Users can access magazines, DVDs, music, computers, software, eBooks and eAudiobooks for free. Library resources are available at the library as well as online. The library also provides opportunities for lifelong enrichment and assists and promotes the development of literacy, education and workforce skills.
“Something as easy to get as a library card can really spark a passion for learning,” Children’s Services Manager Kristin Williamson said. “We try to offer a variety of programs for both children and adults to make all Metro Libraries a space for learning and enrichment.”
With a library card, parents can take advantage of the variety of resources available to help set their child up for success. The library plays an essential role in the education and development of a child by providing access to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) programs, educational apps, homework help resources and more. Studies show that children who are read to at home and who use the library perform better in school and are more likely to continue to use the library as a source of lifetime learning.
This year, Walt Disney Studios, The Incredibles, are Library Card Sign-up Month honorary chairs, helping to promote the value of a library card and bring attention to the many ways libraries and librarians transform lives and communities through education. During September, by signing up for a library card, renewing an inactive card or referring a friend, Metro Library customers will be entered into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire.
Since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has been held each September to mark the beginning of the school year. During the month, the ALA and libraries unite together in a national effort to ensure every child signs up for their own library card.
