Negro Fliers Finish Class

One of the few schools of its kind in
the country, the flying school for Negro
veterans at the Country Club airport,
has graduated !ts first class.
Raymond Davis, chief instructor and
operator of the school, said Saturday
the next class is ready to start and
some of the first students have enrolled
in more advanced flying course.
Five got their private flying licenses
last week after completing 40 hours'
flight training.
They are all from Guthrie, which
is Davis' home town. The graduating
students are Jodie Dewberry, Milton
Owze, Edgar Cherry, LeRoy Perry and
Clifford Smith.
Dewberry, Owze and Cherry immediately
enrolled in the school to earn
their commercial flying licenses.
Davis learned to fly before the war
at the Al Guthrie flying school in
Stillwater. During the war he was a
fllght commander at Tuskegee, Ala.,
in the 99th and 332nd squadrons.
He trained more than 200 pilots
while he was instructing there, he
said.
