Description:

Convoys climb the road leading to the tunnel on the south slope of the Salang Pass, Afghanistan, c 1983. The pass lies on Highway 76, called the "Road of Life" by the Soviet troops because it was the only paved road connecting the military bases in central Afghanistan with the Soviet Union.
