Posted on: Wednesday, May 30, 2018

The launch of Metro Library's 2018 summer reading program, “Libraries Rock” begins Friday, June 1st. The program gives children, teens AND adults the opportunity to earn prizes while they read for fun and promote the importance of reading in our communities. The program launches June 1 and concludes July 31. Summer readers can track their reading progress and earn fine waivers, books, tote bags or cellphone accessories. There will also be prize drawings for Kindle Fires and iPads for participates who have an active Metro Library card. Prizes must be claimed by Aug. 15.

Participants can also select to donate their fine waivers and prize books to someone in need. This year the summer reading Read it Forward program will donate books to local non- profit organizations including Citizens Caring for Children, Faithworks of the Inner City, Mary Mahoney Memorial Health Center and Sisu Youth Services. All summer reading book prizes are sponsored through the Friends of the Metropolitan Library System.

OKLAHOMA CITY (May 29, 2017) – Don’t believe what it says on the calendar. As far as kids who live in Oklahoma County are concerned, the official first day of summer is June 1. That’s when the Metropolitan Library System’s annual Summer Reading program begins.

There are many milestones on the road to reading success. Keep in mind that kids develop at different paces and spend varying amounts of time at each stage. Homes full of language and book reading can build an environment for reading milestones to happen.  If you have concerns, talk to your child’s doctor.  Early intervention is the key to helping a struggling reader.

As a part of our ONEcard partnership with Oklahoma City Public Schools, we are co-sponsoring a reading room this summer at Penn Square Mall with the ReadOKC Task Force. This is a great opportunity for children to read while at the mall with their families and will be great exposure for the initiative. The Reading Room is located on the second floor of the west end of the Mall next to Dillard’s.

  • Summer Reading isn't just for kids

Summer Reading is for everyone! You might remember participating in summer reading as a kid, but our program is for all ages-- even adults.

Studies have shown that reading can stimulate your mind, reduce stress, improve your memory and concentration, and strengthen your analytical thinking skills. Even better, it only takes 20 minutes of reading each day to enjoy these benefits. "Reading" doesn't mean you have to sit perfectly still in a chair with a 900-page book from another century. Your 20 minutes per day will net you the same benefits from reading no matter if you're "reading" in print, digital, or even audio formats.

Summer is almost here and that signals the arrival of the one thing kids everywhere look forward to – summer vacation. It’s the time when children and young adults have fun just being a “kid” and can’t wait for summer camp, pool time, family time or vacation. But one thing you may not be aware of during the summer is the "Summer Slide."

Ah, summer – the highly anticipated season of freedom from responsibility.  Hectic day schedules are set aside to master new skills. The best form for cannonball splashes?  You’re practically an expert already.  The intricacies of mixing flavors for the perfect snow cone?  Yeah, you’ve got that covered too.  Easy stuff.  But as laziness fully sets in with the realization that an entire month of your vacation time still lies ahead of you, remember in these fleeting days of midsummer relaxation that there is something much more frightening to contend with in August than the giant mosquitos at Grandad’s house…the dreaded Summer Slide, or the tendency to forget everything you’ve learned during the previous school year.

Our Summer Reading program has everything you need to keep your brain tuned up while you continue your adventures for a few more weeks.  Entire families have the opportunity to participate. Children have access to experiences that further their sense of discovery.  Teens can prepare for the higher levels of literacy needed for college education and future employment.  Even adults can challenge themselves with new goals to improve their brainpower and wellbeing.  The knowledge you gain should be rewarding enough, but your library has plenty of other incentives to sweeten the deal.  Readers completing each goal can win fine waivers, books and more. Each week, participate in activities to win drawing prizes. Complete Goals 1 and 2 and be eligible to win larger drawing prizes such as tablets and eReaders.

Free books, free knowledge, free prizes, free free free!  What’s not to love about that?  Celebrate your freedom this month at the freest place of all, your library.

We're at the end of another successful Summer Reading program, and we couldn't have done it without the commitment of our employees and their enthusiasm and teamwork. Also crucial to the program's success are the 349 teen volunteers who worked hour after hour signing up participants, handing out incentives, assisting with programs, reading to children, and doing dozens of other support activities.
