  • Queen Elizabeth II
Posted on: Tuesday, December 22, 2015

On Christmas Day, December 25, millions of viewers around the world will tune in to see The Queen's Christmas Message. Each year Queen Elizabeth addresses her subjects in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth, presenting highlights of the royal year and is one of the few times that the monarch speaks from her heart, directly to the people, without consulting with her advisors. In "Dear Old Blighty" families plan Christmas Day around the speech, generally gathering around the television to see the Queen at 3:00 PM (GMT) before enjoying Christmas dinner. Even if you're only mildly interested in the royal family, this year is one you may not want to miss as the Queen will certainly address her new status as the longest reigning monarch in British history.

  • Throwback Thursday - 2006
Posted on: Thursday, March 26, 2015

Meanwhile Kazakhstan entered the space race with the launch of their first satellite KazSat-1. And it proved to be a bad year for autocrats as South American dictators Alfredo Stroessner and Augusto Pinochet and Iraqi strongman Saddam Hussein all left this mortal life in 2006.

  • Meet ‘Nicest Nazi’ Author at Belle Isle Library
Posted on: Friday, November 21, 2014

Meet Christiane Brandt Faris, local author and Oklahoma City University professor, at the Belle Isle Library, Monday, Dec. 1 at 6:30 P.M.

Faris will discuss her new book, The Nicest Nazi: Childhood Memories of World War II, a reflection on her childhood under the regime of Adolf Hitler.  “You are the nicest Nazi I have ever met,” a comment made by a fellow volunteer during a fundraising event, was meant as a compliment for the author, but she regarded it as offensive and ignorant. Such comments motivated her to reflect upon her childhood during World War II and the chaotic postwar period.
