Posted on: Tuesday, July 24, 2018

Growing up in a landlocked state, I never really worried about sharks…now, alligators are another story but that’s for another time, anyhoo for those of us who wonder what would really happen if a tornado was filled with deadly sharks (this is tornado alley after all!) and who find the deadly toothy grin of a great white fascinating…“SHARK WEEK” is upon us and we have to prepare! I’ve included books, ebooks, audiobooks, dvds and streaming videos!

  • Talk Bookish to Me

Like most snooty book nerds, I turned my nose up at audiobooks for a long time. I know how to read. I don’t need to listen to someone else read a book to me, I thought. Audiobooks are lazy. But then I realized that there were certain activities not well suited to reading a print book—operating a motor vehicle, for instance—that took up a good portion of my time. Time I was spending NOT reading books, which is just a travesty.

If you like to listen to audio books, try Metropolitan Library System’s hoopla Digital, where there is never any waiting for the book you choose. You can download 6 items per month, ending on the last day of the month and resetting on the first of each month. All you need is your library card number, and a web browser, smart phone, or tablet, and you can keep them for 3 weeks. I downloaded them using the hoopla app on my android phone. If you don’t have a particular title or author in mind, try browsing some of the fun categories such as “happier family road trips,” “best of hoopla 2017,” or “celebrity readers.”

The Metropolitan Library System is now offering free digital media streaming to library customers. Hoopla offers digital streaming much like Netflix, but it is free with a library card.

The library system partnered with the digital web platform Hoopla to offer movies, TV shows, music, audiobooks and eBooks 24/7 without holds or waits. The free digital streaming service includes over 450,000 titles.
