TEEN READ WEEK ENCOURAGES TEENS TO VISIT THE LIBRARY

OKLAHOMA CITY– Strong reading skills translate into better performance at school and better preparedness for careers – during Teen Read Week the library highlights the importance of making time for reading.

Teen Read Week is Oct. 7-13, 2018 and the Metropolitan Library System invites teens to take advantage of reading in all its forms – books, magazines, eBooks, audiobooks and more. To encourage teens to read and visit the library, Metro Libraries are offering programs to make crafts and DIY, watch movies with friends, join a book club, play games and trivia, explore STEAM activities (science, tech, engineering, art, math) and other exciting programs.

Studies show that reading for fun improves students’ test scores. It’s also important to talk about reading with family and friends. Parents can model this behavior by asking their teen what they are reading, visiting the library and making reading a part of their daily routine.

“Teen Read Week gives us the opportunity to reach out to parents and teens to share the joy of reading,” Teen Services Manager Emily Williams said. “We encourage parents to not only take advantage of the library’s book collection, but to explore the library’s online resources with their teen including research tools, college prep and career preparedness resources.”

Teen Read Week is a national adolescent literacy initiative created by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA), a division of the American Library Association. It is held annually in October, the same week as Columbus Day. For more information, visit www.ala.org/teenread.
